“Red Pottery”Dai Takayama

Jun.24 - Jul.5, 2015

Artist will be at the gallery EVERYDAY during the exhibition.
Sokyo Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Dai Takayama who creates works inspired by ancient ceramics and ruins. After he became independent as a ceramicist, he studied making earthware in Tanzania where he had visited once in his school days. There is a village called Bujora where people make potteries in primitive method. He spent almost every day there and learnt a skill for making ceramics.
His works are made from Shigaraki clay mixed with rouge. He polishes thoroughly when they are half dry, then they are burned off a field using a lot of chaff. As a result, a beautiful color gradient from dyed bright red to glossy black appears. About ancient potteries, Takayama mentioned that although there are slight differences in shapes and colors, all of the potteries have strength and serenity, but simultaneously fragile. Through a long period of time, ancient pottery is recreated by a contemporary artist. Not only the skills he learnt in Tanzania, but also his works evoke magnificence and gentleness from the spirit of ancient world.
Please come see the exhibition if you are in Kyoto.
