“PAESAGGI COMUNI ( common landscapes)”Fausto Salvi

Sep. 4 - Sep. 20, 2015

Opening Reception: Fri, Sep 4, 5pm - 7pm
Sokyo Gallery is pleased to announce an inaugural solo exhibition by Fausto Salvi. Fausto Salvi has a pottery studio in Italy and he takes an active part in the international art scene by working in residence and entering numerous works into various exhibits in Europe, America, and Asia. Using traditional technique of Majolica ceramics, he makes sculpture with pop colors and decoration. However, it also has a nuance of irony and contradiction towards modern society from his unique point of view.
“PAESAGGI COMUNI” is an Italian word for “common landscape”. There are various forms of culture in the world, but as the time passes, their differences tend to blur each other. From eating habits, fashion, buildings, and even social problems have been assimilating into western culture. The same can be said for here in Kyoto. Due to the progress of transportation and the internet, the world that gets even more tightly interconnected, and this enabled people to travel to faraway places and share the moment with locals. That fulfilled our curiosity and gave us many chances for encounters, on the other hand, the society lost its identity, then the landscape all seem the same. That strange phenomenon in modern society is what he called “common landscapes”.
At Sokyo Gallery this autumn, you can discover various series of Salvi’s works. “Fly Love” refers the pleasure of travel, the discovery of new places and people, and satisfaction of the desire and curiosity about new things. “Village” expresses the reality of isolated people and houses through geometric forms. "Spy Game" is a group of modular pieces that mocks the excessive control on people and territory by CCTV cameras.
Please come and see this exhibition if you are in or near Kyoto.
