“JUN KANEKO” Jun Kaneko

Nov.1 - Dec. 25, 2014

Jun Kaneko is an internationally-renowned artist who is respected highly in both the contemporary art and contemporary ceramic fields. Since 1986, Jun has lived and worked in Omaha, Nebraska and created repeated abstractions on ceramics. This is his inaugural solo exhibition in Kyoto, and Sokyo Gallery is honored to host him in the city that symbolizes the old capital of Japan.

Jun is known for creating huge Dango, but in this exhibition he presents twenty-two smaller works. In these works, he reinvestigates the relationship of intimately scaled artworks to a traditional Japanese building. The exhibition is a visual and conceptual challenge to his work.

In Japan, contemporary art and contemporary ceramics have been conflicting. Ceramics uses unique materials and techniques such as clay, glaze and firing; however the product can hold powerful artistic meaning. What is the line between ceramics and art? On this occasion, I would hope that this exhibition gives you some time and material to contemplate those questions and the future direction of contemporary art in Japan.
